The apron game is a collective game on how to build a narration on food (or any other topic) together, facilitating the partecipation of every kid.
Teacher Ana da Silva explained the game and we experimented it during the explanation, so that teachers could propose this game to their students in every country.
Tools: an apron with pockets, cards with image and/or words, a pot, a ladle, a paper and a pen, an object the teacher will use as a “magic object” to choose who is going to “cook” the part of the story.
Directions: Every pocket corresponds to a part of the narration. Teacher Ana da Silva used Vladimir Propp “Morphology of the folktale” as a basis to create the categories, but you can choose whatever method you prefer the most. For exemple, our apron had the following pockets/categories:
1. once upon a time (the beginning of the story);
2. female and male hero (who is the hero of the story?);
3. location of the story (where is the story set?);
4. mission to be accomplished by the hero (what is the hero going to do?);
5. location where the hero is going to accomplish the mission ( where is the hero going to accomplish the mission?);
10. Happy ending
The teacher put the chairs around a table with a pot on it. All the kids sit down. The teacher put the cards with the several possibilities inside the right pocket (it’s better if every category corresponds to a color). With the “magic object” the teacher chooses who’s next in the narration of the story. When someone is chosen, he/she has to pick a card and read/look at what’s in it and use it as a suggestion to go on with the story (ex: you choose a card from the first category “once upon a time” and the card says: a couple of carrots”. That’s the beginning of the story, but the kid is free to add whatever detail he/she wants, for ex.: once upon a time there was a couple of carrots, one was old and one was very young”). The game goes on like that for every category until the end of the story. Important: someone has to write down the story !
Here’s our story:
“(1.)Once upon a time, there was a dish. (2.) There also was a salad, a big green salad with big mussels. (3.) This salad lived under the ground with a mole. (4.) She had make a very original and creative dish for a big food festival organized by (5.)her friend and neighbor, the mole.
The mole was recieveing her whole family and wanted them to be proud of the plants and animals that lived underground.
The day of the festival, The Planet of Dreams was full of people and the salad was very busy cooking her dishes, putting origan, lemon, basils and other delicious spices.
